Brookhurst Primary School Curriculum

Curriculum Policy – January 2009

“Brookhurst aims to be a caring, welcoming, stable and friendly school community, providing the best possible environment for children to learn, to develop and to gain an understanding of the world around them. We want to bring the best out of our children, ensure that they have a fulfilling time at school and prepare them as fully as possible for the next stage of their lives. Vision Statement

Introduction:
The curriculum forms the basis for our learning and the experiences our children enjoy during their time at Brookhurst. We are proud at Brookhurst that our curriculum goes beyond the legally required elements of the National Curriculum and encompasses creative, cultural and sporting opportunities.

Our curriculum uses the National Frameworks to ensure that every child develops the key learning steps and ensure that our children receive experiences and opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in different ways. We ensure that learning at Brookhurst broadens the values and opportunities for every child as they grow and develop.

Curriculum Content:

In Foundation Stage, children follow the six areas of learning as identified by the EYFS:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Mathematical Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

From Year 1 upwards, all pupils follow the National Curriculum:

  • English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Physical Education, Music, RE and PSHE
  • English and Mathematics follow the Primary National Frameworks.
  • Religious Education follows guidelines from Warwickshire County Council agreed syllabus.
  • PSHE follows a scheme from Cambridgeshire
  • All other subjects are based on guidance from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)

We have broadened our curriculum to ensure that the children receive teaching in French, coaching in PE by a Sports Coach and Music from a teacher from the County Music Service.

Implementation:

The curriculum is planned effectively, providing progression and continuity. It promotes an enjoyment of learning and a commitment to learning and achieving. Through the provision of rich and varied activities we aim to:

  • Encourage the best possible progress and attainment for all of our children
  • Enable children to make connections across different areas of the curriculum
  • Help our children ton think creatively and solve problems
  • Develop their capacity to learn and work independently and collaboratively
  • Enable all children to respond positively to opportunities, challenges and responsibilities
  • Enable all children to acquire and develop a broad range of knowledge, skills and understanding
  • Use assessment and target setting to enable our pupils to make appropriate progress

Curriculum Organisation:

  • The curriculum is taught through discrete subjects, with linked areas where relevant
  • Each year group has a Long Term Plan, highlighting the units of study in each subject area. This is reviewed regularly
  • Work is planned by the year group team. Litearacy and Mathematics planning is on a weekly basis following the Primary National Frameworks. Medium Term plans for the other subjects are written by the year group team.
  • Children are grouped according to the activity. Maths groups operate from Year 2.
  • Children with special needs, EAL or Gifted and Talented are identified and, where appropriate, differentiated activities are provided for
  • Teaching methods used will use a variety of whole class, group and individual teaching methods
  • Teachers are aware of the different learning styles of children, and endeavour to use a variety of methods in the day to day delivery of the curriculum
  • The RE scheme of work follows the agreed syllabus from Warwickshire County Council
  • Brookhurst has a Teaching and Learning policy which is intended to promote consistency and high standards and meet the school aims as outlined in the Vision Statement.
  • There is an Assessment policy which clearly sets out the role of assessment in the curriculum.
  • Curriculum delivery is monitored in accordance with the school’s Monitoring and Evaluation Policy

Roles and Responsibilites:

The Deputy Headteacher has responsibility for the leadership of the curriculum together with the specific subject leaders. Monitoring of the provision of the Curriculum is by the Senior Leadership Team (HT, DHT, TLR Literacy, TLR Numeracy, TLR Inclusion, TLR Assessment, TA3).

The TLR Inclusion is responsible for the development of provision mapping and for supporting the work of support staff to achieve the best possible outcomes for individual pupils.

Class teachers ensure that the curriculum is well-planned and taught and that the aims are achieved for the class. Class teachers regularly review and, if necessary, update curriculum planning.

The Governing body regularly monitor the success of the curriculum at committee level through individual presentations by subject leaders and at Full Governor meetings through the Headteacher’s report.
