The world of ICT is a rapidly changing one but one that can't be ignored. At Brookhurst, we recognise the importance of children having a good understanding of where and how computer technology is used in today's world, and of developing their own ICT skills.
Where possible, this is achieved through developing and applying ICT knowledge and understanding in other subject areas, e.g. children in Y3 learn about copying, pasting and rotating clip-art images through designing repeating patterns in art. Computers are also used to help children develop skills in other areas, e.g. through using interactive activities to practice spelling or number activities, and to an increasing degree in whole class teaching. The use of such resources is almost certain to increase as the Online curriculum is developed.
As regards equipment, we have an ICT suite with 16 computers where each class from Year 1 upwards has 2 timetabled lessons each week. There are also networked computers in each classroom and these, together with those in the suite, can be used to access the Internet (under adult supervision of course!). Internet access will be greatly enhanced when our Broadband connection is installed, due in Spring 2004.
In our resource area we have a large interactive whiteboard onto which the image from a computer can be projected, and teachers can take their classes here for certain whole class activities. There is lots of exciting software being developed for use with this and their interactive nature encourages a high level of motivation in the children. We also have digital cameras, computer linked microscopes and floor robots (Roamers) which the children can use to support their work.
