Design & Technology
Design and Technology
At Brookhurst, we aim to develop children’s creativity, problem-solving skills and confidence through an engaging and practical Design and Technology curriculum. Our vision is to inspire pupils to become imaginative and thoughtful designers who can identify real-life problems and create purposeful products that improve everyday life.
Our aims in teaching Design &Â Technology
We aim to give pupils opportunities to:-
- develop the knowledge and skills to design and make products of good quality
- to recognise and to demonstrate creativity and innovation
- to convey ideas using ICT, drawings, notes, plans and models
- solve problems and identify needs
- investigate the technological and use their knowledge to discover how things work in their world
- select and use appropriate tools and materials safely
- evaluate their ideas and work at every stage
- evaluate the work of others including those from different cultures and periods of history
Following the National Curriculum for Design and Technology, pupils learn to investigate existing products, generate ideas, plan, make and evaluate their work. They use a range of tools and materials safely and effectively while developing an understanding of structures, mechanisms, textiles, materials and food technology.
Evaluation is embedded throughout the design process, with children encouraged to reflect on and improve their ideas. Learning is enriched through cross-curricular links and real-world contexts, helping pupils to understand the impact of design and technology on the world around them, both past and present. We aim to prepare students to become creative, responsible and innovative designers of the future.
